"Southwark.TV"
remains a priority for CTVT which is
drawing up plans for a national rollout
of its unique community media model. It is also pleased to announce a number of other
ventures:
1 General & Advanced
Media Courses
A raft of training
courses across video, editing and
filmmaking is being prepared by
Community TV Trust. These will be
offered in Southwark, probably at the
City Learning Centre - an excellent
amenity replete with fast connectivity,
cameras, tripods, latest software
packages. Whilst the Courses will be
essentially practical, time will be
given to media analysis and discussion.
Mainstream negativity especially in news
underlines the need for media literacy.

Recognition Awards 2005
A film of the latest
awards night for Southwark young people
has now been completed for
Southwark's Youth & Connexions Service, with Chris Haydon as Producer
and Louise Doherty of VAPA as Executive
Producer. The event was held at Glaziers
Hall, London Bridge in the middle of December and was filmed on
three cameras. Post production was
carried out at the Southwark.TV edit
suite at Corsica Studios, Elephant &
Castle.
3 Somali Community Media Project
CVT is supporting the Somali community in London - and subsequently
aims to reach across the UK - in launching a community media venture designed to support sections of the Somali community that is especially in need.
In the first instance, web space on the
Southwark.TV website managed by
Rockingham Somali Support Group will
serve as the improvised web base for
this multi-agency initiative. Somali
leaders and media professionals from
Southwark, Camden, Wembley, etc.
recently met to formalise joint aims.
Need is considerable: many families have no father, due to the long civil war in Somalia; a high drop out rate from schools among young Somalis indicates the scale of social disaffection; many older Somalis speak little or no English; there are health needs ... and so on. It is proposed to
use the 'Southwark.TV' model of public website, deliver media training and encourage
wide participation. The website will be bilingual.
For now there will be news on the local
Somali Support Group's section of the Southwark.TV website.
4 Fair
Street Documentary Project
CTVT is to produce a film
of a year-long public art project run by
a local housing office near Tower
Bridge. Fair Community Housing Services
raised funds to commission a
professional artist to develop a 65 foot
high, bare wall. Mark Dion is the
appointed artist chosen by a residents
committee. Residents will also receive
media training and the Fair Community
Housing Services has become another
recent recruit to Southwark.TV for which
it has now received its web training.

Freewheelers
Chris Haydon is
delivering a project combining
media training and documentary filmmaking
around an Arts Council funded performing
art project being produced for
Freewheelers. The working title for the
'play' is "Rolling On" which will take
us back to the 1969 moonlandings and the
age of the Triumph Herald.
Freewheelers are based at
the Queen Elizabeth's Foundation
Development Centre in Surrey which works
with severely disabled young people to
give them the skills they require to
enable them to move on to a lifestyle
and location of their choice.

6 Penwith
DC, West Cornwall
A project delivering
social enterprise skills to young people
at both primary and secondary school was
presented at the Tregenna Castle Hotel,
St Ives in late November 2005. The event
was filmed and is to be edited into a
short promotional film.
