About SOUTHWARK.TV

open-access, community media

Peckham-based Community TV Trust [CTVT] is in partnership with the London Borough of Southwark and its Education Department, in a project managing a Borough-wide, open-access, community media service.

A mapping exercise is now complete and a nine-week pilot project across February and March 2003 ran successfully. Nine organisations are participating - four schools, a college and four community organisations:

Primary Schools - Goodrich & Goose Green
Secondary Schools - Archbishop Michael Ramsey & Aylwin Girls School
Southwark College
Freestyle (on Aylesbury Estate, managed by Southwark Arts Forum)
Livesey Museum
Peckham Young People's Magazine Project
South London & Maudsley NHS Trust

CTVT can now announce that funding has been secured for the rest of the current financial year. Plans are in place for expansion and it is proposed to build the partnership base up to a membership of 60 organisations by April 2004.

Links are also being forged with Peckham's cinema, the Peckham Premier - where a 35mm blowup of a 30 second trailer is being screened alongside mainstream films; with the National Film & Television School; the Southwark City Learning Centre with whom live webcasts are being planned; with Tate Modern - the stunning Kapoor installation was filmed; Corali Dance who work with people with learning difficulties; with Education Business Alliance's Netfolio, a Southwark scheme to provide digital portfolios for all, and so on.

Southwark will speak to Southwark. In video, text, multimedia design, music/audio, photography. This will be accessible via website www.southwark.tv There will also be screenings and meetings for participants. Local media will show itself to be useful, relevant and fun - a positive force for individuals and community.

It is intended to harness the potential of the internet, London Grid for Learning, local networking, physical and virtual meetings. The Government's ideas of bringing the classroom and the community closer together will receive a shot in the arm as "Southwark.TV" coordinates its Borough media service.

"Community and Education are natural partners, from Primary up to Life Long Learning. Tomorrow's media practitioners are appearing at an amazing rate; not just college media courses, they are also to be found in the nation's Primary schools," says CTVT Director, Chris Haydon.

For Southwark Council, Stephen Douglass at the Department of Culture & Heritage is the active partner working closely with Community TV Trust throughout. Community TV Trust salutes the attitude and readiness of Southwark Council in taking up and backing this venture.
